About this site

Legal disclaimer

Bankruptcy Route is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. Everything on this site is general, educational information. Reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship.

What the information on this site is, what it is not, and where to turn for advice about your own situation.

General information, not legal advice. Rules and amounts change; check with a lawyer or the court before you act.

On this page

What kind of information is this?

The pages explain how US bankruptcy works in general terms. They do not apply the law to your facts, and they cannot tell you whether to file, which chapter to choose or what to write on a court form.

Bankruptcy has long-term financial and legal consequences, and the right answer depends on your income, your property, your debts, your state and your local court. For advice about your own case, talk to a bankruptcy lawyer licensed in your state.

How current is it?

Each page lists the official sources it rests on and the date it was last updated. Laws, court rules, fees and dollar amounts change, and a page may be out of date by the time you read it.

If a page disagrees with an official source, the official source is right. Check the current rule with the court, the U.S. Trustee Program or a lawyer before you act.

Does using the site make anyone your lawyer?

No. Reading the site, using the chapter finder or sending a form does not create an attorney-client relationship with Bankruptcy Route or with anyone else. Please do not send confidential details through the forms.

The chapter finder gives a first orientation from a few general questions. It is not an eligibility decision.

Does the site prepare bankruptcy documents?

No. Bankruptcy Route is not a bankruptcy petition preparer. It does not prepare, complete or file bankruptcy documents for anyone.

What about lawyer introductions?

We plan to introduce readers to independent bankruptcy lawyers, and lawyers may pay us for those introductions. That is not open yet. When it is, any lawyer you speak to is independent of this site, and whether to hire them is your decision.

What about links to other sites?

We link to official sources so that you can read them yourself. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content.
